Black-eyed Peas

Hi y’all! Happy New Year!

Did y’all have a safe & happy New Year like I told you? Did ya eat lots of black-eyed peas? I know I sure did! When I realized that last year was such a shitty year for me and a lot of people I know, and it was also the only time I have NOT had black-eyed peas on New Year’s day, I made damn sure I had some this year! In fact, I ate durned-near a whole bag of ‘em on my own… and I was takin’ no chances… I was listen’ to the Black Eyed Peas all day long too!

I don’t exactly know where the tradition (mostly in the South) of having black-eyed peas on New Year’s comes from, do y’all? Some parts say you’ll get $1 in the next year for every BEP you eat. I think that may have been before inflation took hold. Maybe you get $10 or $100 for every one you eat now, I don’t konw.

Anyways. I made a quick trip up to see my friends in Provincetown, MA for New Year’s. It snowed while I was up there, but even if I’d a stayed in Texas I would’ve seen snow! Isn’t it weird that it snowed at Xmas, and around New Year’s in Texas this year? It hasn’t done that since like 1939 or something.

So I really miss Provincetown. It’s beautiful there even in winter. And the snow was pretty. There was enough folks in town for the weekend to make it seem lively, without being overcrowded. I won a pie, too!

You see, my friend GTH and me went into this place called The Art House to get some coffee, and while we was there, an acquaintance of ours offered us some free tickets to see Zoë Lewis perform. She was a riot. She sings upbeat, funny, kinda folksy songs. Zoë travels all over the place (I think she’s in India now as I write this. I asked her to bring me back some curry.) and y’all should check her out if you get the chance. Anyway, during her show, she asked a few trivia questions to the audience and handed out goofy little prizes. Well, the big grand prize question was “In Scotland at New Year’s, it is traditional for the first person to cross the threshold to offer a gift. What is it?” Don’t ask me why I knew this, but I was the only one in the audience that knew the answer… a lump of coal! And the prize was a blueberry pie! Just what I needed to go with my black-eyed peas and coffee.

Well y’all have a great time doin’ whatever you’re doin’, and I’ll see y’all next time, y’hear?

Love ya, hon!

PS: BTW, I want to give a special shoutout and thank you to my friend Roger in Texas who sent me a special gift in the mail. Thanks, hon!
